Home to a large ethnic population, including the Mon, Karen and Burmese, who have long settled in the border towns of Sangkhlaburi and Thong Pha Phum. Most tour operators in Kanchanaburi offer trips to these areas that combine culture and adventure in one easily accessible package. Some of the best hiking trails are in three national parks: Saiyok in Saiyok District and Erawan and Chalerm Rattanakosin in Srisawat District.

On the western border, Kanchanaburi is a popular adventure destination thanks to its mountainous terrain, covered with forests and crisscrossed with a network of rivers. Jungle rafting can be arranged from a mountain pass to the stunning Lawa Cave, a two-hour journey. Bamboo and inflatable rafts are also available for a trip down the Songkalia in Sangkhlaburi.

Freshwater FishingKanchanaburi is the capital of freshwater fishing of the country. The dam reservoir and its numerous tributaries in the jungle area are the true anglers' happy hunting ground of this world. A favorite resort for savvy anglers is at Phae Nam Jone River Huts, a two-hour boat ride from Sri Nakharin Dam. A valley now submerged under the damwater near the resort , provides the best fishing spot in the country.

Horse RidingThe natural trails in Kanchanaburi are mostly in pristine environs. There are two trail riding stables with fine bred horses.

GolfKanchanaburi is overrun with golf courses. Last count there were over 20 in the province. The birdie hunters can choose from beautifully landscaped courses on the windy plain, not far from Bangkok for a one-day game for golfers from the city, or the cool, jungle-surrounded, hilly courses further out. For those who are staying in Kanchanaburi, the four outstanding courses are : Nichigo, just out of town; Home Phutoey, the most scenic course, 80 kms out on the highway to Sai Yoke Waterfalls; Mission Hill club, designed by Jack Nicklaus at Thamuang district, 30 kms out of town and Evergreen Hills Golf Club.
