Event Highlights

The Ratchaphruek – Greater Mekong Sub-region GMS Expo 2008 is being held at the Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006 exposition site in the northern city of Chiang Mai from February 9 – 17, 2008. The expo showcases a great variety of premium-grade handicrafts, art and craft products and local products from Northern Thailand and the other regions of Thailand as well as the those from countries of the Greater Mekong Subregion. These include wood-carvings, gift items and souvenirs, items made from mulberry or saa paper, textile and textile products, ready-to-wear items and fashion accessories, furniture and home and living accessories, ceramics and tableware, processed food, herbal products, cosmetics and spa products. An international cultural show presented by performers representing the countries of the Greater Mekong Sub-Region from 18.00 – 21.00 daily adds a festive feel to the event. The expo, jointly organized by the Ministry of Commerce and Chiang Mai province, is also open to the public. Admission is free for individual visitors.

On 5 December 2008, His Majesty the King will celebrate his 81st birthday anniversary. His Majesty has therefore announced that this special event be known as "the Celebrations on the Auspicious Occasion of His Majesty the King 81st Birthday Anniversary 5th December 2008"

An alms-giving ceremony in the morning is followed by a huge festival of music and culture at Sanam Luang in Bangkok to celebrate His Majesty the King’s birthday. You can also appreciate the beauty of the decorations along Ratchadamnoen Avenue.

Phuket International Blues Rock Festival

Now in its third year the Phuket International Blues Festival gets underway, 22 to 23 February, at the beachside Hilton Phuket Arcadia on the island’s west coast Karon Bay. It promises to be bigger than ever with at least 12 acts performing on stage during the two-night event. Now a firm fixture in Phuket’s annual entertainment calendar, the festival attracts top blues bands from around Thailand, while two popular bands from Australia and the US return once more.

Bangkok’s popular blues bands take centre stage with performances from Cannonball, Georgia, Full House and Soi Dogs beating out the rhythm to a packed house of blues fans.

The Phuket King’s Cup Regatta is Asia’s biggest and most popular regatta. More than a regatta, the week long event consists of great parties, great sailing and lots of fun.

Inaugurated in 1987 to celebrate the 60th birthday of His Majesty the King of Thailand, the event has been held every year since during the first week of December. In 2006, the event was voted as Yatching Event of the Year at the Christofle Asia Boating Awards. This honour follows a record year in December 2006 with over 100 boats entering the event and with a record media turnout. It is the second consecutive year the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta won this prestigious award.

With the Royal Patronage of His Majesty the King, the Regatta is organised by the Phuket King’s Cup Regatta Organizing Committee under the auspices of the Royal Varuna Yacht Club, in conjunction with the Yacht Racing Association of Thailand, the Royal Thai Navy and the Province of Phuket.

The unique geographical landscape of Chaiyaphum Province in the northeast of Thailand gives rise to a range of natural attractions of exceptional beauty. Of these, the fields of pinkish-purple Siam Tulip, or "Dok Krachiao", come in to full bloom in the early part of the rainy season from June to August.

Also commonly called ’patumma’, ’bua sawan’ (heaven lotus), or ’bua bok’ (the land lotus), the Siam Tulip is a member of the ginger genera — Curcuma or Zingiberaceae.

Bhumibol Dam in Tak province will be hosting the Bhumibol Dam Invitation International Mountain Bike Championships for the fourth consecutive year on August 23 – 24, 2008. Noted for its scenic landscape, Bhumibol Dam provides an ideal setting for the mountain bike races.

The event is being jointly organized by the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (Egat) and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) in cooperation with the Sports Authority of Thailand (SAT) and Bhumibol Dam to promote ecotourism in tandem with outdoor sports at both a national and international level.

There are displays featuring local traditions and culture of Lanna people; the presentation of 4-region cultural shows and contemporary plays, e.g., Jumping Bird Show, King-ka-ra Bird Dance, Khru Ka-wai Sword Dance

Works f Art Road (Chiang Mai Pedestrian Road) :
Activities on the art road assemble all works of art for presentation and for sale and display to spectators to watch, e. g., local Lanna music performance, real-life paintings, works of art by students, artistic inventions from skilled artists and craftsmen.

- Exhibition of Artistic Handicrafs on the theme of " Phum Phaya Sala Muang" meaning the local wisdom of Lanna craftsmen who are to present artistic handicrafts at the Event. The 14th Hat Yai Nature Run 2008 to Celebrate Prince of Songkla University’s 40th Anniversary.

Prince of Songkla University associates with government and private organizations to arrange Hat Yai Nature Run at Prince of Songkla University, Hat Yai Campus on 10th August 2008.

According to Prince of Songkla University’s 40th anniversary and the support of royal trophy from His Majesty the King as the principle awards for the competition every year, Prince of Songkla University arranges an enormous festival with the strong supports from Hat Yai Running Club, Tourism Authority of Thailand (Southern Office Region 1), Nakhon Hat Yai Municipality, Kho Hong Municipality and 42nd Senanarong Military Camp.

For the last year, the total number of runners was 4,286 runners. This number included 4,063 Thai and 228 foreigners. Among foreigners, there were 198 Malaysians, 19 Singaporeans, and 6 Europeans and others.

For the numbers of runners for each running category, the record indicated that:

Half marathon event composed of 283 males and 61 females for the total of 344 runners.
Mini marathon event composed of 676 males and 166 females for the total of 842 runners.
Fun run event composed of 419 males and 363 females for the total of 782 runners.
Family run event composed of 180 males and 199 females for the total of 379 runners from 103 families.
Student participants composed of 1,981 students from schools in Hat Yai
